18th-century Roman school, follower of Carlo MARATTA (1625-1 - Lot 44
18th-century Roman school, follower of Carlo MARATTA (1625-1713) Birth of Jesus Canvas 48.6 x 37.5 cm Comparison: The Nativity (or Holy Night) by Carlo Maratta (or Maratti), painted around 1650-1655, is an Italian Baroque masterpiece in the Gemäldegalerie, Dresden. The canvas depicts the Virgin Mary tenderly holding the Infant Jesus in her arms, in the midst of a nocturnal scene illuminated by a soft, warm divine light. Inspired by Correggio, the work emphasizes maternal tenderness, the moving simplicity of the Holy Family and subtle chiaroscuro effects. Maratta, a 17th-century Roman master, excels here in classical harmony and religious emotion. Another famous version can be found in Rome, in the church of San Giuseppe dei Falegnami.
