Lucien LEVY-DHURMER (1865-1953) - Lot 149
Lucien LEVY-DHURMER (1865-1953) Sage above the clouds, praying before a city Canvas circa 1910 - 1920 Signed lower right 60 x 81 cm. Provenance: - Albert Antoine Oustric (1887-1971), was a French banker. He founded a bank in 1919 and made stock market speculation his specialty. In 1929, he became a member of Peugeot's board of directors and the carmaker's main banker. - Jasmine Collection - Par heritage Lucien Lévy-Dhurmer made his first trips to the Orient in 1895, imbuing his work with a marked Orientalist sensibility. Fascinated by Eastern landscapes and religions, he created works imbued with exoticism and mystery. If the oriental experience is real, Lévy-Dhurmer doesn't just reproduce it, he sublimates it by adding a touch of the dreamlike, creating mystical, contemplative worlds through the mist. This exceptional set of ten paintings on the theme of the Orient, all numbered on the reverse of the canvas from 1 to 10, takes us back to the great decorative ensembles created by the painter, notably the decoration of the Wisteria Dining Room for Auguste Rateau between 1910 and 1914, now preserved at the Metropolitan Museum in New York. Here we can see the growing importance of landscape in the painter's work from 1901 onwards, as well as the presence of symbolic animals.
