JAPAN, Muromachi period and later.
Sculpture featuring Kannon bosatsu on a base decorated with two rows of inverted lotus petals. The bodhisattva is depicted standing, with his torso bent and arms outstretched. The nude bust is partially draped in a monastic robe ending in a thick, flowing pleat at the bottom of the body. The canonical scarf wraps around the arms and flutters down the body. The benevolent face is styled in a high bun with a crown jewel that falls in several symmetrical curls. An openwork pectoral jewel echoes the hair ornament, as does a tiara, not forgetting the lotus flower at the back of the skull from which the golden rays of the nimbus once emanated. Gilded lacquered wood, copper, black pigments for the hair.
