James Wilson CARMICHAEL - Lot 37
James Wilson CARMICHAEL (Newcastle 1800 - Scarborough 1868) Shipwreck off Dunstanburgh Castle Canvas 57 x 80 cm Dunstanburgh Castle is located on the north-east coast of England, in the county of Northumberland, on a small part of the Whin Sill, which forms a promontory overlooking the North Sea. The site has traces of occupation predating its construction in the 14th century. In 1313, Earl Thomas de Lancastre, cousin of Edward II of England, began construction of this great fortress. It gradually fell into disrepair. A shipwright in his youth, James John Wilson Carmichael spent three years on a ship sailing between the ports of Spain and Portugal. He devoted all his spare time to art, eventually abandoning the carpentry trade to establish himself as a drawing master and miniature painter. In 1838, his name appeared for the first time as an exhibitor at the Society of British Artists.
