Exceptional Kuba sword, Democratic Republic of Congo. - Lot 130
Exceptional Kuba sword, Democratic Republic of Congo. It bears a label, probably in Stephen-Chauvet's hand: Bambala fighting knife (Ilondo type). This is the oldest type, created by the Bushongo king Shamba Bolongongo. In one corner, partly torn, it says: Bakuba, and in another: 1600 to 1620 (this is certainly an attempt at dating, no doubt linked to the quality of the object and its sumptuous patina). The top of the handle is adorned with a beautiful motif. Wood with deep patina, iron H = 55 cm Provenance: Charles RATTON
