Superb container made from coloquinte. - Lot 121
Superb container made from coloquinte.
Luba - Songye or Sapo-Sapo.
It is partially covered with thin strips of rattan, forming checkerboard patterns in places, and decorated with beaded wreaths.
The hanging handles are made of plant ties on which pearls are strung.
This is a very fine antique work of great refinement. Very few examples are known. One, for example, is in the Tervuren Museum (listed as Songye or Sapo-Sapo), and another in the Smithsonian in Washington (listed as Songye), from the Van Opstal collection.
Coloquinte, rattan strips, vegetable ties, old trading beads.
Unlike other known examples, this one has no neck above the opening.
H = 26 cm.
Slightly missing.
Inv. n° 545. Acquired from Dehondt fils on September 11, 1928.
Provenance: Charles RATTON
