Glé fetish head in modeled clay, Côte d'Ivoire - Liberia
The eyes and eyebrows are represented by cowrie shells, while the teeth are made of tinplate. The top of the head is adorned with feathers. A similar object is reproduced in "Arts de l'Afrique noire, Marcel Griaule 1947, n°45". It is described as "an object used for witchcraft rites" and is attributed to the Cercle de Man.
According to George Harley (Notes on the Poro in Liberia 1947), page 34, these were fetishes used in the medical practices of elderly women, midwives and practitioners of herbal medicine.
