TARDY DE MONTRAVEL (Louis). The Astrolabe and the Zélée, January 21, 1840, under the southern polar circle. Ink, pencil and wash on paper, at sight 18.7 x 33.5 cm, in a gilt frame (54 x 40.5 cm), signed lower right. MS. caption on the passe-partout; 2 old labels on the back mention: "Drawing by Louis Tardy de Montravel - ensign on the Zélée - Dumont d'Urville's circumnavigation voyage to the South Pole and Oceania (January 21, 1840) - this drawing has been reproduced in the large atlas." / "The Astrolabe and the Zelee, January 21, 1840, under the Southern Polar Circle." Original drawing signed, representing the corvettes the Astrolabe and the Zélée making their way between the icebergs of the Antarctic Ocean, January 20, 1840. This drawing was used as a model for plates 168 and 169, with slight variations, of volume II of the Atlas of the "Voyage to the South Pole", by Dumont d'Urville (1846). Jules Dumont d'Urville and his crew disembarked on the only continent still unexplored, and the captain planted the French flag in Terre Adélie, named after his wife Adèle. The artist, Louis-François-Marie Tardy de Montravel (1811 - 1864), was an ensign on the Zélée. He had volunteered for the expedition to Antarctica and Oceania led by Dumont d'Urville from 1837 to 1840. His works of astronomy, geography and hydrography were one of the major sources for the writing of the atlas of this expedition. Some minor rubbing and stains. Inscriptions on the back on paper stuck to the support.
