PHIPPS (Constantin-Jean). Voyage to the northern pole made in 1773 by order of the king of England. Paris, Saillant & Nyon, Pissot, 1775. In-4, XII pp; 259 pp; (1) ff, spotted calf, spine with ornate nerves (Rel. of the period). First French edition, illustrated with 12 folding plates and 11 folding tables in-text. Expedition undertaken by two ships : the "Race-horse" and the "Rascasse" in order to explore an arctic route towards the Indies. Blocked by the ice off the Spitzbergen archipelago, the expedition allowed however numerous observations on the natural history as well as precious astronomical, magnetic, hydrological and nautical surveys. Slight foxing. Nice copy.
