CROISIÈRE NOIRE. — IACOVLEFF (Alexandre).
BLACK CRUISE. - IACOVLEFF (Alexandre). Elephants of Api. Api, Belgian Congo, 1925. Black pastel on cardboard (75 x 56 cm), dated, situated, signed Iacovleff lower right. Under a gilded wooden frame. The elephants, tied by the leg, are lined up behind a fence watched by a young mahout. The Black Cruise stopped at Api's farm in the Congo in March, in this "school for elephants", raised and trained for clearing land and heavy transport. The mahout takes in elephants between the ages of 8 and 10, and in just one year teaches them to be led. An inscription at the bottom left, under the leg of the first elephant in the line: "Betty", and further down "N'Dobani". A painting and two drawings on the same subject were presented at the famous exhibition of Alexandre Iacovleff in Paris, Hotel Charpentier from 7 to 23 May 1926, which met with great success (n° 69: Les éléphants d'Api - n° 175: Les jeunes éléphants (Api) - n° 176: Les éléphants de la ferme d'Api). Paper yellowed in places.
