CAILLIAUD (Frédéric). Autograph letter signed. Dated Marseille du Lazareth, 15 Oct. 1818, to his parents. A double ff. in-4. "I still have fifteen days of quarantine, after which I will be free (...). Unfortunately my mummies and other boxes of antiquities, having to undergo the same quarantine (...), they will be delivered from the Lazareth only on January 25. (...) You will be, I think, surprised to see sarcophagi covered with Egyptian hieroglyphic subjects, in fresh colors ruddy colors. (...). I will take with me to Paris duplicates of these objects to make money." Frédéric Cailliaud (1787 - 1869) participated in two expeditions to Egypt, one from 1815 to 1818 and the other from 1819 to 1822, he was awarded the Legion of Honor under Charles X in 1824, and he brought back a collection of about 1000 pieces. Stains, foxing, several restorations, small lacks reaching some letters.
