BROWNE (W. G.).
BROWNE (W. G.). New journey in the high and low Egypt, Syria, the Dar-four, where no European had penetrated; made since the years 1792 until 1798. Paris, Dentu, An VIII - 1800. 2 vol. in-8, calf with roots, triple gilt fillet, smooth spine decorated, green title and tomaison pieces, speckled tr. Chadenat II, 5027. First French edition, translated from the English on the second edition by J. Castéra. It is illustrated with a frontispiece, a large folding map of Dar-Fur, a large folding map "De la route que suit la Caravane du Soudan en allant d'Egypte au Dar-Four", a plan of the Residence of the Sultan of Dar-Fur. In 1793, William George Browne entered the interior of Africa by sailing up the Nile. He then joined a caravan to cross the desert and reach the kingdom of Darfur in the Egyptian Sudan. Arrested and detained by the local sultan, he was not released until 1796 and returned north. Browne returned safely to England in 1798, but was murdered by brigands in Tabriz in 1813 during a new expedition. The present work contains the first description of the region by a European. It contains many details about the geography and monuments, the commercial relations, the government and the customs of the local populations, without forgetting the dangers incurred by the travelers. Slight foxing at the end of volume II. A nice copy.
