FLAUBERT (Gustave). Salammbô. Paris, Ferroud, 1900. 2 vols. in-8, brown morocco, large frame of cold filets around a mosaic of orientalizing interlacing motifs in beige, turquoise blue, water green, orange, ornate ribbed spine, repeating the decorations of the boards, int. framing of the same morocco with floral mosaic frieze in blue marble, lining and endpapers in grey silk, cover and spine cons., gilt edges (Carayon). Illustrations by Georges Rochegrosse, etched by Champollion. Preface by Léon Hennique. Edition at 600 copies. One of 200 on japon, n° 25, with 3 states of engravings. It contains 2 letters a. s. : - one from Champollion, dated 1898, mounted on a tab, indicating that he is working on Salammbô (unidentified recipient). - the other one from Carayon, dated 1907, mounted on a mitre, to Dr Lorentz, from Le Havre, about this binding : " I hope you will be satisfied although I have a bit broken the budget for the Salammbô. You are the only one who has this ornamentation, and I will be delighted if you like it. Prospectus bound in fine. Ex-libris Henri Lenseigne, and unidentified ex-libris. Spines slightly faded.
