MOLIERE. Le Malade imaginaire, comedie meslee de musique et - Lot 17
MOLIERE. Le Malade imaginaire, comedie meslee de musique et de danse by Mr de Moliere. Paris, chez Estienne Loyson, 1674. Small in-8, 112 pp, red morocco, double gilt fillet in frame, spine gilt, gilt edges with inner lace (Morrell binder, London). Edition published the same year as the first edition. Guibert, Bibliographies des œuvres de Molière I, p. 370-371: "This edition is extremely rare. It is perfectly well printed and some particularities let suppose that it was made in Holland and not in Paris, in spite of the name of Loyson which appears on the title. Contrary to the original edition, this one lacks most of the stage sets and the two prologues. It is very likely that it was printed from an incomplete but generally correct text. As for the exact date of the printing, we can place it at about the same time as the original edition of 1674. We know only the copy in the reserve of the BN (RES. Yf67) [Cat. James de Rothschild. II, p. 92. n°1220]. The notice to the reader is printed in italics, and there is no pagination error for page 56 (indicated as 6 by Guibert). Tchemerzine, VIII, 333: "The only copy of this edition is at J. de Rothschild". Hinges restored. A short-margined copy, with occasional damage to the running title. Some foxing; early 20th century handwritten note on the title page, concerning this work; small old ink stain on the title page; discreet angular spotting to the last few leaves, with tiny lack at the upper corner.
