Engraved title, lx pp., 137 pp. Unique edition of this very important work tracing the history of English cookery from its beginnings, composed by the Reverend Richard Warner (1763-1857), collector of antiquities, rector of Sway, near Lymington, in Hampshire. The introductory address, which provides a history of ancient cooking, is followed by a presentation of six books on cooking from the thirteenth to the eighteenth centuries: - a work on the precepts of English cooking, composed in 1390, after the Master of the Kitchens of King Richard II (196 formulas). - a book of English cooking composed around 1381 (91 formulas). - recipes for cooking around 1285. - recipes for preserving fruit around 1631. - the Banquet on the occasion of the enthronement of George Nevell, Archbishop of York, in the sixth year of Edward IV's reign. - the Lenten Banquet for the enthronement of Archbishop William Warham, in 1504. The work is illustrated with 2 large color engraved figures, The Peacock Feast (on double page), and A Saxon Meal, composed in the manner of ancient friezes. From the libraries of James H.
