JAPAN, Muromachi period and later. Sculpture featuring Kanno - Lot 83
JAPAN, Muromachi period and later. Sculpture featuring Kannon bosatsu on a base decorated with two rows of inverted lotus petals. The bodhisattva is depicted standing with his chest bent and his arms outstretched. The nude bust is partially draped with the monastic robe, which ends at the bottom of the body in a thick, moving pleat. The canonical scarf is wrapped around the arms and falls down the body, twirling. The benevolent face is styled in a high bun with a top jewel falling in several symmetrical curls. For adornment, an openwork pectoral jewel echoes the hairstyle ornament, as well as a tiara, not forgetting the lotus flower at the back of the skull from which the golden rays of the nimbus once emanated. Gilded lacquered wood, copper, black pigments for the hair. Height : 87 cm. Restorations and missing parts. Certificate of radiocarbon dating for the base (Brussels Art Laboratory). Former Belgian collection. Museography : To be compared stylistically with the seated example in the Dayton Art Institute (Ohio, USA) under the number: 1979.49.
