Boizot & Gouthiere Large white marble and chased and gilt bronze clock "L'étude et la philosophie" or "Les arts et les sciences", after the sculptor Boizot, by Gouthière. The openwork white enamel dial rests on a temple, topped by an eagle, framed by a man writing and a woman reading. Decorated with foliage, masks and loves. The white enamel clock face is openwork and features Roman numerals for the hours and Arabic numerals for the minutes. Hanging on a wire. Louis XVI period. Height : 62,5 cm. 62,5 cm, Width : 69 cm, Depth : 14,4 cm. Louis-Simon Boizot was a pupil of the sculptor Michelangelo Slodz when he won the first prize in Rome in 1762. He joined the Royal School of Protected Pupils and spent five years at the Académie de France, becoming an academician in 1778. He was appointed professor at the School of Fine Arts in 1805. He was commissioned by Catherine II of Russia and for the French capital, notably for the Bourbon Palace in 1772, the churches of Sainte-Geneviève and Saint-Sulpice. He received orders from the count of Angivilier... and in 1774 he succeeded the sculptor Falconnet at the head of the Manufacture de Sèvres. Pierre Gouthière was born in 1732, he was a student of François Cesiset, whose widow he married and took over the workshop in 1758. He obtains the protection of the duke of Aumont, he is named in 1767 " only ordinary gilder of the Menus-plaisirs of the King ". He is the inventor of the gilding with mat. He received orders from Marie-Antoinette, Madame Du Barry, the Count of Artois, the Duchess of Mazarin... Ref : Three examples are known in the castle of Sceaux and in the Hermitage museum in St Petersburg. Our clock is reproduced in the encyclopaedia La Pendule Française du Moyen Age au XIXème siècle by Pierre Kjellberg, Les Editions de l'amateur, page 260.
